Are we the problem?

I wonder at times why so many people are turned off to church.  It could be that they just aren’t interested. But I don’t know if that’s true.  Perhaps, one big reason is that we’ve seen far too many religious hypocrites in our churches.

As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” (Romans 2:24)

Paul wrote this passage to the religious Jews in the church at Rome.  In context (Rom 2:17-29), Paul writes about people who say they “embody the truth” but don’t live like they preach.  They talk a big game, but their walk doesn’t back it up!

This has been a big problem in the Church at large for as long as I’ve known.  From the pulpit to the pew…this has been an systemic problem.

Christians who talk about purity and then cheat on their spouses.
Christians that look their best on Sunday, but live like hell during the week.
Christians that receive God’s generosity, but stiff their waitress after church!! (This drives me insane…)

What we fail to realize is that our hypocrisy can actually be the biggest reason why so many people are not lining up to hear about Christ.

I shutter to think that God’s name would be blasphemed because of my actions. To think I could be part of the reason that someone doesn’t embrace eternal life is unthinkable.

I hope that people are drawn to Christ and not repelled because of how I live my life.
I hope the same for our church.
