When we think about the perfect Son of God and the many miracles He performed, we get this picture that Jesus could do anything. In many regards, He could. He was the divine God in flesh and not even death could stop Him. However, there is one thing Jesus couldn’t do.
One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at Him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!” (Luke 23:39)
As Jesus was on the cross dying for OUR sins, one of the criminals hanging on a cross near Him challenged Jesus to prove He was the Christ (Savior.) This criminal wasn’t the first to to make this challenge. The Pharisees at one time asked Jesus to do a miracle to prove He really was the Christ. Jesus refused to show them one.
Why couldn’t Jesus do this? There is an inherent flaw in the request. This was the one thing that Jesus couldn’t do.
You see Jesus couldn’t save both. He couldn’t save Himself and us. It wasn’t possible…even for God.
In fact, this is the essence of God’s love. Perhaps no other verse in the Bible shows us what love looks like more than this one. Jesus could not save Himself from the cross AND still save us. Someone HAD to die for the sin of this world. It was either us or Him. Aren’t you glad He chose us over Himself?
Just a great verse to chew on today.
